Filhos de Saturno/Sons of Saturn
(ENGLISH VERSION) (versão em língua portuguesa em breve....)

FDS 28 JUL 2007-Small from joao machado on Vimeo.

Filme experimental.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part documentary, part fiction. Sons of Saturn is a narrative experiment that tells a fictional story with the use of real archival footage of a family.

A grandfather, a father and a son, bound by a legacy that goes beyond the intertwining branches of their family tree. A bond beyond time, beyong distance.

A pact sealed in the dawn of time under the sign of Saturn.

		<description>O TEMPO É A VERDADE DO HOMEM

Based on a letter written by Jonathan Hacke, an artist and mental patient at a psychiatric institution. “The Champagne Club” is a shocking and profoundly innovative journey in the heart of madness.

Four thrill-seeking aristocrats of the Los Angeles art scene set out on a vacation to an exotic tropical villa. There, they find exquisite foods, the finest champagne, an abundance of drugs, and all the time in the world to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh. In the peak of excess, they stumble upon a new, and very strange kind of thrill: madness.

Faltava o tempo.
A pré-história do digital, talvez.

GEOMETRIC CAVE

There are various species found in nature, that along their lives, leave behind a physical manifestation of their evolution. Some insects leave empty cocoons and snakes change their skin. Amongst us humans, our transformations happen differently, but we possess memory, which allows us to identify and compare how much we’ve changed. Thanks to memory, we internally carry our cocoons, changed skin and other carcasses of our transformations. The constant changes that mark our existence, amount to what could be described as the story of our lives. In fact, we even carry a collective memory which helps us trace back to the history of humanity itself.

Locked into our evolution as a species is the history of art, whom we can trace back to pre historic times. Perhaps art is that which comes closer to these physical manifestations of change found in nature. In the trace of art history, we can find out all that we were, all that we are and that which we aspire to be.

The print series “Geometric Cave” was conceived from photographs I took from sculpture casts taken at the extinct bronze foundry Fonderie Godard in the outskirts of Paris. Much like the insect’s empty cocoon, a silicone sculpture cast is a shell made to the image of the body which it helped shape in it’s womb. The hollow, concave form of the cast resembles a cave, which tied in perfectly to the theme of evolution since the early days of prehistoric caves. Recently, Anthropologist Genevieve Von Petzinger studied and put together a visual archive of geometric signs found in early cave art. Beyond the famous hunting images, there’s a group of non-figurative symbols like the spiral, the triangle, circle and many others. We may never be able to decipher these forms of graphic communication of our forefathers. I incorporated some of these mysterious symbols from Von Petzinger’s archive to the photos of the sculpture casts.

The idea was there but it didn’t feel right yet. I was missing the element of time. The effect of time which has the power to cast bronze, a butterfly or the history of mankind for that matter. I needed to create time artificially and I remembered what happens in video when you make a copy of a copy. This is referred to as loosing an image generation. I found this technique of “lost generation” perfect not only thematically but also esthetically. With each generation lost, the image altered it’s colors and lost much of it’s detail until it became a vague rememberance of the original file.

The final result looks less prehistoric then it does like an old video or computer image. This aged digital look carries a stronger weight for me then ten Lascaux caves put together because this was a past which I personally lived through. It reminded me of early video synthesyzers, 8 bit video games and psychedelic tv titles.
In the process of this project, I was able to see finger paintings made with ocre paint on the cave walls by the first humans. I was also able to see my own finger, marking pixels on a computer screen. Between these two poles, lay the history of our time on this planet and man’s obsessive battle in marking his presence in a universe that forever reminds us of our insignificance.

Everybody needs a map to understand the physical world we live in. We look to maps to understand the spiritual world, as in astrology, for example. We need maps to understand each other in this constant exploration. An exploration of both the extent of the galaxy and the depths of our own inner-space.
